Would you go for Severance?

So I’m wondering who among us would actually do Severance?

By Severance I am refering to the TV show.

For those not familiar with it, basically these people work at a company where they have a severance system implemented. So, what exactly is this severance system?

Well, basically, when they go into work, after a specific area they forget everything about their personal lives and only remember work things. At the end of the work day they get into an elevator and at some point on the way down they go back to remembering their personal lives but forget anything that happened at work.

So on one hand, it’s cool because you get to live your life without ever having to worry about work, you have no idea what goes on at work, you don’t even know who you work with.

The part that sucks is that another part of you would get done with work on a Friday afternoon, get on the elevator, push a button, and before they know it, the elevator opens up again and it’s Monday and time to work. They may feel refreshed, but they never get to leave work. They have no idea what their lives are like, do they have a family? What things they like to do? They have no clue.

So ofcourse this part of being at work all your life would suck.

The one thing I believe the TV show fails at though is that the outside you still has to get up early and get ready for work and go to work… that’s like the biggest thing I hate about working anyway, for the most part once I’m at work I’m fine, it’s the getting there part that sucks lol

So yes, that’s what I’m wondering, if you worked at a place that gave you the option for something like Severance, would you take it?

Personally I think the concept would be too weird for me, not knowing what I was doing at work, I mean, what you do for work is what gives many of us a sense of purpose or fullfilment. . . . .but if they give me a 1 week trial I may give it a go just to check lol

I feel like this type of work-life style has some benefits along with some dangerous risks. On the surface, it sounds like this type of memory erasure would be beneficial to your mental health. If you had a stressful time in the office, you would forget about the stress the moment you left the building. It would be like you never had a bad work-day at all. You would be free to do what you like outside of work without the burden of stress hindering your joy. In a way, this sounds good.

However, there are some risks. For example, what if you were bullied or harassed during work? From what you described, it sounds like you would forget about all the bullying you endured. Though you would forget about the bullying, it technically still happened. You just forgot. This memory erasure could be abused to torment people during work. People could be tortured during work then forgot about it after they left. If you forget your abuse, did it ever happen? Does it matter if it happened but you forgot? I do not know, but it feels uncomfortable.

Additionally, you mentioned that once you enter the work building you forget everything you did outside of work. From your perspective, it would seem like you never left the building. That sounds like Hell, being stuck at work for the rest of your life. I can’t imagine what that would feel like, but I do not think I want to.

To connect to another point you mentioned, I also do not hate work itself. I hate waking up early, dealing with traffic, and dealing with the parasites pretending to be my friends that are my coworkers at work. If I could do work without doing those other things, I would be happy to the point I would not want to forget my work. So, forgetting my achievements at work would be horrible for me. Still, I hate dealing with waking up and dealing with my worthless coworkers.

But overall, I would not join this system. I think the implied risks may be too dangerous. I do not know if memory erasure is healthy for the brain, mind, and soul of a person.

I just don’t like that I’m at work 46.5 hours per week plus the time to get there and back. Working half a day saturday really ruins the weekend. Also the pay. Wages are very low here. But the work is actually fine. Like Stuff mentioned it’s all the drama that gets tiring.

Yeah, the work itself is not the issue. It is everything around it that is the problem. But, people do not want to change that. Most corpo-drones I worked with believe the unnecessary baggage that comes with work adds to the “wonderful” experience.
